Firefly 2+ Vaporizer Review: Amazing flavor

Chances are, any marketing you see for the Firefly 2+ will tout great taste as a big reason to buy one, and they’re right. It tastes fantastic. Whether it’s herbs or concentrates, the gentle, dynamic convection heat and pure air path deliver amazing, high quality taste. You’ll discover flavors in your herbs that never show up in conduction vaporizers, and with a little practice, you can have sessions that taste great all the way through, with some of the best vapor on the market.

Vape at your own pace

Another strong reason to consider the Firefly 2 Plus is the instant heat up time. Once packed, you can take a full draw from a cold start in 20 seconds and drop it back in your pocket for later. No other vape on the market gets you in and out of a hit quicker, and you can take as long as you want to finish it off, without waste between hits.

Still a tight draw

The original Firefly 2 vaporizer suffered from a very restricted air flow that made you work for it, a lot like getting that first sip from a thick milkshake. Firefly claims they’ve improved the air flow by 33% this time around, and you can tell with side-by-side comparisons. The draw resistance on the Firefly 2+ feels more natural now, but is still slightly on the restricted side of the scale.

Firefly 2 Plus on Table

Hit it their way

Every hit on the Firefly 2+ is designed to be 15 to 30 seconds long, and it works perfectly with the right draw speed. The first six or seven seconds are flavorful, as it gently ramps up to your set temperature, before it starts to push out thicker vapor. Our testers that preferred short sips of vapor, like a Pax or Starry, lengthened their draws to find their sweet spot. The heavy hitters had to slow their draws before it got uncomfortable. If you like a slow, 10 to 15 second draw (or longer), the Firefly 2+ should be right down your alley.

The occasional stir

The Firefly 2+ uses convection heating, so you’ll need to stir the herbs at least once or twice per session to get full extraction. How often you need to stir will be up to you. Our flavor chasers stirred after every hit, and the herbal taste lasted a long time. Otherwise, we stirred after the vapor stopped, or every three or four hits. Getting to the bowl is easy enough - just pop off the lid. But there’s nothing included to stir with, and if you open it up in the wind you could see your herbs blown all over the place. Our best solution was to use a metal stir tool that stuck to the outside of the magnetic cover, so we could stir anywhere without using our fingers.

Simple but awkward interface

With one light and two touch-sensitive buttons, the Firefly 2+ is simple to use, but comes with a bit of a learning curve. Touch both buttons at the same time to activate the heating, and start your draw three seconds later. If you want to change the temperature, you’ll have to either connect the smartphone app, or pick up the instructions and learn the button commands. Out of the box, it is set to 400°F, with a total of seven on-board temperatures to choose from, including 500°F for concentrates.

The two-button-press keeps the Firefly 2+ from heating up unintentionally in your pocket, but feels a little awkward to hit, unless you’re used to smoking from a Sherlock-style pipe. You cradle the vape in one hand while pressing the buttons, and the mouthpiece’s flat shape forces you to hold it flat, never sideways. You can use the app to make the Firefly 2+ fire with only one touch sensor, but then it’s easier to accidentally turn on.

Helpful smartphone app

**On November 15th, 2019, Apple removed all vaporizing apps from its store, including this Firefly app. It might not be permanent, but we are planning on an extended absence. The Firefly 2+ works fine on its own, but can’t be customized with the app on an iPhone, unless it was downloaded before November 15th. Android users still have access to the app.**

Technically, you don’t need the smartphone app functionality, since the on-board temperature controls range from 320°F to 420°F (in 20 degree increments) for herb, with a 500°F temperature setting for concentrates. But the app widens the temperature range all the way down to 200°F in 10 degree increments, adds a few nice features, and fast-tracks you to the help videos. You can change the button press configuration, toggle between Fahrenheit and Celsius scales, and fine tune the heating so you can juice it all the way up to an “11”. If you want to update your vaporizer’s firmware, you can do that as well.

Firefly 2 Plus Docked

Ready for concentrates

The Firefly 2+ comes with a stainless steel concentrate pad already installed in the bowl, ready to go. Just add a small amount of concentrate to the center of the pad, change the temperature to 500℉, and let her rip. You’ll take a few cigar-style puffs to melt the concentrate into the pad, but hit it normally after that. The hits are drawn out over a session at your pace, instead of a single concentrated hit, and are some of the tastiest around. It’s rare that a vaporizer works equally well with herbs and concentrates, and the Firefly 2+ does it better than most.

Average battery life and a quick-charging dock

On-demand vaporizers are tricky to nail down when it comes to battery life. Your mileage will vary depending on the temperatures used, and how hard and long you draw. On average, you can expect to get around six bowls, with five to seven hits per bowl on a full charge. Overall, it feels like typical battery life for a vaporizer, and the charging time is quicker than normal. The usb-C dock fully charges the battery in 45 minutes, and up to 80% in just 20 minutes. If it’s completely dead, you can throw it on the charger and have enough power for a bowl in as little as ten minutes.

Frequent, but easy cleaning and maintenance

Cleaning the Firefly 2+ is incredibly easy. Just open the magnetic lid and wipe down the bowl and borosilicate glass vapor path. The only other thing to do is check the mouthpiece screen for clogs. The downside is that convection vaporizers are finicky, and do best with more regular cleaning. You’ll clean it a little more often than other portable vapes, but not enough to be a pain. If you consider yourself a neat freak, you’ll appreciate how easy it is to get the Firefly 2+ back to sparkling new.

Small and classy

Firefly vaporizers have always had a classy elegance to them, and this one is no different. Its magnesium alloy chassis is barely larger than a Pax 3 but smaller than a Crafty/Mighty, so it’s very pocketable. Its smooth lines and gentle curves tell you it’s something different, but doesn’t scream vaporizer. It’s the kind of vape that makes you want to relax into a mindful session.

Firefly 2 Plus In Hand

Does the Firefly 2+ smell?

All dry herb vaporizers can smell when loaded or dirty after use, but the Firefly 2+ vaporizer contains odors more than most. The bowl itself is in a sealed compartment, but most importantly, the Firefly 2+ doesn’t cook between hits, which is when other vapes will announce your intentions. Most people won’t know what you’re up to until you exhale.

How much is a Firefly 2+?

The Firefly 2+ vaporizer is priced at a premium, or around $161.99. But compared to its predecessor, the Firefly 2, it’s a steal. When the Firefly 2 was upgraded to the “+”, they dropped the price by $80!

For best results

The Firefly 2+ is a full convection vaporizer, and works best if you pay attention to your draw speed, maintenance, and herb pack. Here are some tips to get you started off right.

The Firefly 2+ has a 15 second hit timer, and you’ll get thicker draws if you can pull the entire time. Draws less than ten seconds risk feeling weak.

Check the mouthpiece screen for clogs. It’s easy to forget about this one, since it’s far away from the herbs.

Pay attention to how you pack the bowl with herbs. Use coarse to medium ground herbs. Fine grinds will flow out of the bowl and clog the screen. Pack the bowl full, so the hot air doesn’t move the herbs to the side and flow right by.

Is the Firefly 2+ worth it?

The Firefly 2+ vaporizer is a fantastic vape for a very specific type of person. Vapor quality is on point and hits taste amazing with both dry herbs and concentrates, but the correct technique and a long, slow draw speed is important. If you’re a taste snob that likes to tinker and take really long, slow draws, it can be heaven. But if you like your vapor easy, or like to share, look elsewhere.

Who is the Firefly 2+ for?

The Firefly 2+ is built for the vapor connoisseur who prizes great flavor anywhere, anytime, whether it’s dry herbs or concentrate. It’s also a strong contender if you’re trying to conserve your herbs, since the on-demand heating wastes nothing between hits. There aren’t any dosing capsules for the Firefly, but you can take as much or as little as you want and come back to it later.

It’s not a difficult vaporizer to use, but you’ll benefit from a little time spent dialing in your preferred technique. The Firefly 2+ is a vape we want to grab at the end of a long day, when we want to have a relaxing session, and feel a little special.

Who is the Firefly 2+ not for?

If you don’t care much about taste, you’ll probably get something less expensive and easier to use. There are better vapes out there if you just want to tear through a lot of herbs. Some people will complain about the stirring, but anyone who wants a convection vaporizer should be prepared to stir.

Is the Firefly 2+ the best vape?

There is no all-around best vape for everyone - just the right fit for the time, place and person. While I don’t think the Firefly 2+ vaporizer checks enough boxes for very many to call it the best vape, it is unique enough to enchant the right person. If relaxing, tasty sessions that require attention and long, slow draws excite you, the Firefly 2+ deserves consideration.

Our take

Without a doubt, the Firefly 2+ is a connoisseur’s vape. The taste is up there with the best of them, and the new, lower price slides in below most other top-shelf vaporizers. The more open air flow is a definite, needed improvement, but will that and the lower price point turn this one into a hit? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
