For quite some time, sessions with a DynaVap VapCap weren’t really possible without a torch lighter and a can of butane. Each session demanded a steady hand, a live flame, and a bit of finesse to nail down. These desktop and portable induction heaters ditch these requirements and provide a safer, more relaxing session with consistent heating and zero flames. Let’s dive in and explore your options.

What is a VapCap induction heater?

Whether plugged in or running off a battery, DynaVap induction heaters consistently and easily heat VapCaps portable vaporizers without a lighter. They replace the two-handed approach with an attractive, modern solution that eliminates all the twirling and hissing. Some induction heaters for Dynavaps are portable while others required to be plugged in. Just press your DynaVap into the chamber and wait for the click!

How do they work?

With one exception, all of the induction heaters for DynaVap work the same. Turn on the master switch, and the heater is ready and waiting. Insert the VapCap into the chamber until it clicks, and start vaping! The Apollo 2 and Rover heaters have a small switch in the hole that you press down on with the stem, initiating the heat cycle. The Orion, however, senses the VapCap’s presence, and starts heating as soon as you insert the VapCap, without pressing down on a switch. It’s like magic! None of these portable induction heaters will turn on until something metal is inserted. A pencil eraser or some other material won’t work.

Easy to use More expensive than fire

Ditch the lighter

Bottom line

If you’re a DynaVap aficionado or just don’t like to use the torch, an induction heater is a must. It’s the easiest and most consistent way to heat your VapCap.

Why use one?

In short, ease and consistency. The art of torch wielding usually requires a learning curve to work through before you produce the type of hits you’re looking for with your VapCap. What part of the cap do you heat up? How do you rotate the stem? How close do you get with the flame? Grab a portable DynaVap induction heater and you’ll never have to ask these questions. They’re simple, more reliable, and provide the most consistent heating possible. There aren’t a whole lot of reasons not to use one with your DynaVap M.

The Apollo 2

The Apollo 2 Induction Heater is your entry-level heater and makes a perfect at-home unit. This heater comes with a bulky power supply to plug in, so it’ll likely spend most of its time on your desk or a side table. It showcases the Dynatec label and comes with a small magnet on top to hold your Cap. Plug it in and press the toggle switch on the back to turn it on. The heating tunnel will turn green and then it’s ready to go. Insert your VapCap dry herb vaporizer until the light turns from green to red, wait for the click, and then hit it.

DynaVap Induction Heaters Review Apollo 2 with Power Cable

First Generation Apollo 2 Induction Heater with Cosmic Cover Design.

For our review we ran the Apollo 2 through a number of VapCaps, and it averaged between seven and nine seconds to click. The heating cycle on this heater is intentionally cooler than the Orion. If you like hotter sessions, you’ll need to leave the VapCap in the chamber a second or two after the click. The downside is more work for hotter hits. The upside is more flexibility and control, especially for flavor hounds.

The Apollo 2 Rover

The Apollo 2 Rover builds off of its predecessor with an updated cover design and an internal battery. You’ll notice the original Apollo 2 and the Rover are the same size and feature the same magnetic holder and chamber location. Pick them both up and you’ll immediately notice the significant difference in weight from the Rover’s battery pack. Disconnect from the wall and enjoy consistent heating wherever you go! The Rover grants its users the same punch of the Apollo 2, but with portability and a lower-profile power plug.

The Rover is heavier than the Apollo 2, but has a much smaller power supply.

The Rover has the same heat profile as the Apollo 2, and also clicks in seven to nine seconds. The chamber light will start out bright green with a full charge, and slowly fade to yellow as the battery drains down. Dynavap claims 100+ heating cycles per charge, and in our testing we got almost 150! It's safe to say this one can power a tailgate party.

The Orion

The Orion Induction Heater enters with an attractive, pocket-friendly design and updated features. It’s about the size of a Crafty+ vaporizer and weighs no more than the original Apollo 2. It comes in a chic, black finish with a cooling magnet on top and the Dynatec label along its side. Quick USB-C charge port with easy access to a power source wherever you go.

The Orion can be charged universally with its USB-C charge port.

Triple click the power button and the unit will turn on with a green indicator light. The Orion’s induction heater senses your VapCap vaporizer and engages the heater, without the need for a button. Instead of pressing down with your DynaVap, simply drop it in, and the heater will engage with a blinking orange light while you wait for the click. The blinking light is nice. It takes the guesswork out of over-heating, as you can count the blinks after the click instead of just counting in your head.

The Orion had an impressive four to six second heat up time, a slightly hotter session, and went a long time without a recharge. Colored lights indicate the current charge - green at full, blue when it reaches 30%, and red at 0%. Dynavap claims the battery will provide 40+ cycles per charge

DynaVap Induction Heater Review Size Comparison
Pictured from left to right: Apollo 2, Apollo 2 Rover, Orion.

If you’re strictly an at-home user and/or have a limited budget, the Apollo 2 is your best bet. It’s lightweight, consistent, and will never run out of juice. Otherwise, the Rover performs exactly the same but with a charger, and can be dragged around the house or out to a party.

If you need a more portable option, and the price doesn’t scare you, we prefer the Orion. It’s small enough to throw in a small bag or purse without taking up too much space, and has the power to run sessions all night long. Its small stature won’t attract too much unwanted attention if you take it out in public, and USB-C charging is our favorite way to charge on-the-go.

Only the Orion is truly portable.

Who’s it not for?

It’s hard to argue against the idea of an induction heater, but they might not be for everyone. If you take a minimalist approach or you’re traveling light, it’s hard to beat the size and price of a pocket torch. Butane and lighters are cheap. The Orion is one of the smallest induction heaters we’ve seen, but it comes at a price, and won’t go unnoticed inside your pocket or bag.

The ritual doesn't have the same feel.  Sessions with a DynaVap and torch are known to be quite personal to some users. The careful rotation of the VapCap, coupled with the steady hand of the flame, has brought users closer to their sessions with its ritualistic nature.

A few tips

DynaVap induction heaters heat VapCaps without the guesswork, but that doesn’t mean you’re roped into the same thing every time. For example, you can remove the VapCap about a second before it clicks for more flavorful, lower temp hits. Or try holding it in for a second after the click for thicker, more potent hits - but don’t go too far!

This technique is easiest with the Orion because you can use the blinking light to time it right. If you’re going for flavor, try counting six or seven blinks, and then hit it. For thick hits, try two or three blinks after the click. Play around with it and see what works best for you!

The cap-shaped light to the left of the VapCap blinks. Use it to time hot or cold hits.

Want monster concentrate hits with the Dynacoil? Leave the vapcap in your induction heater past the click, until the heater auto-shuts off. Then have at it. Don't do this with dry herbs, though!

Induction heaters aren’t just for convenience. They’re great tools for the true DynaVap masters, who disregard the click and vape off the rails. Relying on nothing but instinct, once they hear the click, they start their hits and then reheat over and over again before the cool-down click. These jedi-knights of the Dynaverse can take down a full bowl in one long session with thick hits that dance along the edge of combustion. It takes a lot of practice to pull this off without burning your herbs, but the sessions are insane!

Conclusion

When DynaVap first hit the scene, the only way to effectively heat VapCaps was with a torch lighter. Now we have induction heaters as an alternative, and the experience is very different. The two main reasons to buy one are ease and consistency. The real question is which one to get. Let your style dictate that, and enjoy the ride!
